Getting There
Canberra’s airport lies about seven kilometres east of the city centre but it only handles domestic flights coming from all the other major Australian cities. Sydney is about thirty minutes away by air and a one way fare with either Quantas or Ansett will cost you about $163, Melbourne is an hour away and will cost about $232 whereas flights from Adelaide and Brisbane are slightly more expensive and will cost you about $340. If you do fly into Canberra airport, Action Buses run an hourly service between the terminal and the city centre from Monday to Friday between 6.55am and 10.00pm and the fare is $2. If you take a taxi it will cost you about $12.

Because the city doesn’t have an international airport most of you will probably arrive in Canberra by bus or train. The main train station is located on Wentworth Avenue in Kingston which is just southeast of the city centre but you will have no problem finding a taxi to take you to your ultimate destination. If you arrive by bus, you will probably be dropped off at the Jolimont Centre which is at 67 Northbourne Avenue. Once you get to the centre take full advantage of the free direct lines to the tourist office and to numerous taxi companies – not that we really need to tell you.

Getting Around
The public bus system in Canberra is run by the Australian Capital Territory Internal Omnibus Network (ACTION) which operates a relatively frequent service about the city. If you intend using the bus quite a bit during one day, avail of the day trip ticket which will cost you $6.70 and allows you to make as many journeys as you want. For further information on bus travel go to the information kiosk on the corner of Alinga Street and East Row which opens daily until 11.30pm and sells tickets until 6.00pm. Most ACTION buses leave from the City Bus Interchange which is across Northburne Avenue from the Jolimont Centre.

The other option for transport within the city is to avail of Murray’s Canberra Explorer Bus which travels a twenty- five kilometre route around eighteen of the capital’s major sights. A hop on – hop off tour which departs hourly between 11.00am and 3.00pm you can purchase a one day ticket for $18 or a four hour ticket for $12 and it leaves from the Jolimont Centre. This is an excellent way to see all the major attractions as you can stay for as long or as short a time as you wish at each one and you get a wonderful commentary from the driver to keep you informed throughout the journey.
